Earlier this year multiple storms passed through the area causing damage to several cities and neighborhoods. All types of hail has been reported by doppler radar this year including small quarter sized, golf ball sized, all the way up to softball size in the Salado area! If you saw any of the pictures going around on Facebook you know that was quite the storm.

With these storms causes significant damage to our roof systems and inevitably, sometimes this damage cannot be seen from the ground alone. Besides the hail damage that could have been caused, these storms usually bring with them wind ranging anywhere from 30-65 MPH! These high winds can also cause damage to your home. You could possibly see shingles laying in your lawn from either your house or a neighbor house, or you may notice nothing at all as the shingles have not completely blown off yet. Either way, it is always recommended to find a reputable and local roofer that can give you a free inspection. Let’s go over what a homeowner should do and the steps to take if a storm has come through your area.

FIRST STEPS

• If damage is present, file an insurance claim. This is a fairly simple process but we are glad to help if you feel you need it.
• An insurance adjuster will come to your home and check for damage. They will write an estimate for repairs, we can gladly be there to assist the adjuster if requested.
• We can then compare our estimate with the damage report written by the adjuster to ensure nothing was missed on either end.

BE CAUTIOUS OF

• DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING! Door knocking is standard in our industry and doesn’t mean that they are a bad company, but please do your due diligence on the company and make sure they are qualified, have insurance, can get permitted, etc.
• Any contractor claiming they will pay your deductible. This is illegal in the State of Texas defined by HB2102.

HOW SOON SHOULD WE REPLACE OUR ROOF?

• Hail damage does not usually penetrate the entire shingle, so you have some leeway and doesn’t have to be done immediately before you run into any issues with leaks. But, you still want to mindful that the insurance is paying for it to be replaced for a reason.
• Wind damage can create a little more of an urgency. Wind blown shingles are a break down in the roof system and heavy rain/winds can definitely cause more damage to your home.
